Modelling climate change   Modelling climate change
The latest publication in the ‘Innovations in practical work’ series, Modelling climate change provides an introduction to the way in which the climate can be modelled and the science behind the models. The activities include practical experiments, simple examples of climate modelling, and analysis of observed data.

The activities are intended primarily for KS4 students, but could be adapted for post-16 students.

SEP Waves and Radiation sample pack   SEP Waves and radiation sample pack
The ‘SEP Waves and radiation sample pack’ supports the teaching of electromagnetic radiation with resources such as a simple spectroscope, an infrared transmitter/receiver kit, microwave radiation indicator, diffraction grids, and other low-cost practical resources. The accompanying instruction leaflet provides ideas for activities that relates to pupils’ lives and interests, including work on mobile phones, computer displays, energy-efficient bulbs, remote controls, with scientific explanations for the phenomena observed. Recycling and sustainability and Biofuels   'Recycling and sustainability' and 'Biofuels'
The two latest publications in the ‘Innovations in practical work’ series are Recycling and sustainability and Biofuels. Recycling and sustainability provides an overview of the different options for reducing waste and introduces the science behind different separation methods. Biofuels considers the contribution that renewable fuels can make to the demand for new kinds of energy resources and includes activities that look at how different biofuels are made, and tests how their properties compare to conventional fuels.

The activities in both of the booklets are intended primarily for KS4 students, but could be adapted for KS3 students.

  SEP Seismometer system detects
Messi data
The SEP Seismometer System featured on TV news in Spain last week. One of these instruments installed in the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Barcelona detected an unusual signal on the evening of 27th May 2009. It was found that it coincided with jubilant fans at the nearby football stadium watching the live telecast of Messi’s winning goal against Manchester United in the Champions League Final. Light and matter: models and applications   Light and matter:
models and applications
The latest publication in the 'Innovations in Practical Work' series, Light and Matter provides an overview of some of the models we use in discussing phenomena such as reflection, diffraction patterns, polarisation and emission spectra, and also considers some applications, such as the use of lidar in aerial surveys. The activities provide a practical introduction to the use of electromagnetic radiation in studying objects and materials.

This booklet is intended to be of particular use to teachers who are not physics specialists. The activities are intended primarily for KS4 students, but could be adapted for use with KS3 or KS5 students.

Fibres and fabrics   Fibres and fabrics
This month’s featured resource is the latest publication in the ‘Innovations in Practical Work’ series, Fibres and fabrics.

Looking at the properties and uses of a range of different textiles from traditional natural fabrics to new synthetic and smart materials, this booklet includes a range of activities testing the properties of fibres and fabrics.

The emphasis of the materials in the booklet is on KS4, but some activities can be adapted for KS3.
