Teaching ideas & evidence

Questioning the origins of scientific beliefs can aid an appreciation of the value and importance of science. To do this effectively, students should be taught to use and evaluate evidence to support or refute claims.

Through our IDEAS project, we have been exploring resources and activities to support the teaching of
Ideas and Evidence in science.

  Working together at King's College
In partnership with the Key Stage 3 National Strategy, we commissioned five universities to create resources, working with trainee teachers and their school mentors. Each university focused on specific aspect of teaching Ideas and Evidence, developing lesson plans, classroom activities, teachers’ notes and supporting materials. SEP Teacher Associates can access these resources online, and they are also available on a CD-ROM, Teaching Ideas and Evidence in Science at Key Stage 3.

Initial responses to the resources were very positive, so we have continued to work with three universities to develop extended resources.

Contemporary Science Issues: lessons for Key Stage 4
Keele University has created a resource pack to provide teaching materials that satisfy a range of the requirements in the new National Curriculum for GCSE science, introduced in September 2006. The CD-ROM comprises 18 lessons for KS4 biology, chemistry and physics, complete with resources, lesson plans, technical advice, worksheets and assessment materials. The emphasis of the lessons is on data, evidence, theories, explanations, applications and implications in the context of contemporary science issues. Free copies of this resource were sent to every SEP Teacher Associate in February 2007, and it is now available to purchase from MUTR.

Enriching school science for the gifted learner
The University of Cambridge has produced a booklet and CD-ROM of teaching resources, covering aspects of the nature of science. Aimed at Year 10, the activities provide contexts that will link with and support school learning, but without simply repeating or pre-empting work that the students will encounter in school science. Tasks are designed to be performed in small groups with minimum guidance so that the work is challenging. This SEP publication was available free to Teacher Associates earlier in 2007, and is now available to purchase from MUTR.

Learning to teach about Ideas and Evidence in science
The University of York has produced a portfolio of lesson materials, developed from original ideas and approaches that have been taught in schools then evaluated in teacher workshops. The CD-ROM has been made available to all the schools in the York Partnership for ITT in science.
